"Hats off to the Zeitgeist Stage Company for mounting such an ambitious production which hits a number of high notes … Ramona Alexander as Hester is heartbreakingly effective."
— Ed Siegel, The Boston Globe

In the Blood is a modern day riff on The Scarlet Letter, and tells the story of Hester LaNegrita, a homeless mother of five who lives on the unforgiving streets of urban decay. She is fiercely dedicated to her children (her "five treasures") but her stigmatized social status and her illiteracy keep her down as she struggles to clothe, shelter and feed them. The adults in her life — a social worker, a minister, and an ex-boyfriend — add to the obstacles that are thrown in her path.

After its 1999 debut at the Joseph Papp Public Theatre in New York City, The New York Times called it "an extraordinary new play" and promised, "You will leave thrilled." The play received a nomination that year for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
